PANORAMAPUNKT Berlin – Exhibition · Views · Cafeteria
Whether or not you have had a panoramic view of Berlin in the past or already know the city like the back of your hand, the chance to make out the German capital from the skies is really quite a unique experience…
So what exactly is PANORAMAPUNKT?
PANORAMAPUNKT is a viewing platform that also has its own exhibition and cafeteria. Located on the top floor of the Kollhoff Tower in the Potsdamer Platz square, it offers one of the most impressive views over Berlin. Since it was officially opened in 1999 it has received over 3 million visitors.
Another theoretical possibility to see the city from up above is to go up the Television Tower in the Alexanderplatz; it may be higher but is without some of the advantages of PANORAMAPUNKT:
- Not only are the views absolutely stunning but the platform is accessed by the fastest lift in Europe.
- The entrance costs only 5.50 Euros per person and includes the fabulous exhibition: “BERLINER BLICKE auf den Potsdamer Platz” (Berlin views over the Potsdamer Platz). The Television Tower has long queues and an 1-Euro charge, without an exhibition.
- Its terrace is the best place to admire the sunset.
- The 1930s style cafeteria has a large selection of drinks and delicious cakes on offer – a perfect way to round off the view.
The central location guarantees a 360º panoramic view over the most famous sites and buildings in Berlin including the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Berlin Cathedral, and the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtnis Church. With good weather and a little luck it is also possible to see the Teufelsberg (the highest point in Berlin).
The impressive views of the city are a dream for any photographer. Check out some first impressions of the city.
By purchasing the large panoramic map visitors can also take the views home with them.
At a height of over 100 metres the multimedia exhibition, “BERLINER BLICKE auf den Potsdamer Platz,” tells the story of the Potsdamer Platz. There are probably very few places in the world that have had to undergo so many changes in the past. On floors 24 and 25 spectacular installations and historical content allow visitors to experience the actual changes that took place in the square just below their feet. Nearly 300 years of Berlin’s history within the Postdamer Platz are recreated with the film and photo compositions and 20 lighted glass panels on display in the building.
The representative piece of the Berlin Wall in the tower is a reminder of how the Potsdamer Platz was divided in the times of the GDR.
Perhaps the highlight of the exhibition is the chance to simultaneously experience both past and present eras: while the panels lining the walls relate the stories of the past, with a 180º turn visitors can contemplate Berlin as it is today.
The cafeteria is decorated in the style of a 1930s skyscraper completely surrounded by glass. The fabulous backdrop and stunning views make the delicious cakes and wide selection of beverages taste even better. A visit to the terrace is highly recommended in the summer months and when the weather is good it is a wonderful spot to enjoy the sunset.
